โ€‹

Celebrations wind down naturally and we leave the pub around nine.

โ€‹

Other people drift away in small groups, tired and full and ready to be home.

โ€‹

Lila and I walk to our cars in comfortable silence.

โ€‹

The night air is cool after the warmth of the pub. Traffic noise is distant and the street lights cast long shadows.

โ€‹

"Your place or mine?" I ask when we reach the cars.

โ€‹

She looks at me. "Mine. If that's okay. I need clean clothes and my own bed and—"

โ€‹

"That's fine."

โ€‹

"You'll come?"

โ€‹

The question carries the vulnerability she's still learning to show.

โ€‹

"Yeah. I'll follow you."

โ€‹

Relief crosses her face.

โ€‹

We drive separately through Manchester streets that are blessedly quiet for once.

She unlocks the door and I follow her inside.

โ€‹

Her flat is tidier than it was the last time I was here and somehow I find that reassuring.

"Make yourself a tea, you know your way around the kitchen," she says, dropping her keys in a bowl by the door. "I'm going to change."

โ€‹

She disappears into the bedroom.

โ€‹

Now that I have some time, I explore the space slowly.

โ€‹

The bookshelf holds mostly industry texts. Music theory. Production techniques. Biographies of producers and studio engineers.

โ€‹

One small section of fiction tucked at the end. Mainly mystery novels and I wonder if she ever has a chance to read them.

โ€‹

The walls are bare except for a single framed photograph. Lila and another woman who looks enough like her to be family. Both are younger and they’re laughing at something outside the frame.

โ€‹

"My sister," Lila says behind me.

โ€‹

I turn.

โ€‹

She's changed into soft clothes, leggings and an oversized jumper. Her hair’s down and her face clean. It makes her look younger, more at ease.

โ€‹

I like it.

โ€‹

"Older or younger?" I ask.

โ€‹

"Older. By three years." She crosses to where I'm standing and looks at the photograph. "She lives in Frankfurt now. Works in finance. Married with two kids. Unlike me, she leads a very normal life."

โ€‹

"You're close?"

โ€‹

"We were. Before I got consumed by work." She's quiet for a moment. "I should call her. It's been months."

โ€‹

"So call her."

โ€‹

"It's late."

โ€‹

"Text her then. Tell her you miss her."

โ€‹โ€‹

She looks at me. "When did you become the voice of healthy relationships?"

โ€‹

"About five minutes after watching you almost destroy yourself through isolation."

โ€‹

She smiles and then pulls out her phone and types something quickly. She sets it down on the shelf beside the photograph.

โ€‹

"Happy?" she asks.

โ€‹

"Getting there."

โ€‹

She crosses to the small sofa and curls into one corner. I join her and she immediately tucks herself against my side.

โ€‹

We sit in comfortable silence while the day catches up with us.

โ€‹

"I wonder what happened with Sam & Dusty?" I say finally.

โ€‹

“I’m past caring about Dusty, it’s Sam I have to look after.”

โ€‹

"He's stronger than you think."

โ€‹

"Maybe." She goes quiet. "Do you think she'll come back?"

โ€‹

"Dusty?"

โ€‹

"Yeah."

โ€‹

I consider it. "I don't know. But if she does, it's Sam's choice what happens. Not ours."

โ€‹

"I know. But it doesn’t mean I won't worry. There’s the band’s contractual obligations to think about as well."

โ€‹

"You can worry and still let him make his own choices."

โ€‹

She tilts her head to look at me. "You're very good at boundaries."

โ€‹

"One of us has to be."

โ€‹

"I'm getting better."

โ€‹

"You are."

โ€‹

Her phone buzzes on the shelf.

โ€‹

She doesn't move to check it.

โ€‹

"Could be your sister," I point out.

โ€‹

"Could be work."

โ€‹

"Even more reason to check."

โ€‹

She sighs and retrieves the phone. Looks at the screen. Her expression softens.

โ€‹

"It's Kate. My sister. She says it's about bloody time I remembered she exists."

โ€‹

"Healthy sibling communication."

โ€‹

"She wants to know if I'm eating properly and sleeping enough and whether I've finally figured out I can't do everything alone."

โ€‹

"Smart woman."

โ€‹

"She also says if I don't call her this weekend she's coming to Manchester to physically drag me to dinner."

โ€‹

"You should let her."

โ€‹

Lila stares at the phone for a long time, then she types a response and puts the phone down

.

"What did you say?" I ask.

โ€‹

"That I'll call at the weekend. And that I'm figuring out the alone thing. Slowly."

โ€‹

"Progress."

โ€‹

"Don't sound so smug about it."

โ€‹

"Can't help it. You're learning to be human. It's adorable."

โ€‹

She pushes me gently. "I hate you."

โ€‹

"No you don't."

โ€‹

"No," she agrees. "I really don't."

โ€‹

We settle back into comfortable silence.

โ€‹

My mind drifts to tomorrow. The album's finished but there's still mixing. Final approvals. Delivery to the label. Press strategy. Tour planning.

All the things that come after the creative work is done.

โ€‹

"What happens now?" I ask.

โ€‹

Lila shifts against me. "Gary needs two days for final mixing. Then we deliver to Julian. He'll schedule listening sessions with the label. Press rollout starts in about three weeks. Single release six weeks after that. Album two months later."

โ€‹

"And the tour?"

โ€‹

She screws up her face.

"Should be simple, but the Dusty factor…”

โ€‹

“Complicates things,” I add.

โ€‹

“Yeah,” she nods. “Dates are booked. Europe first and then the UK. Promoters are already asking about adding shows based on advance interest."

โ€‹

"So we're back to chaos."

โ€‹

"Different chaos. More manageable chaos."

โ€‹

"You hope."

โ€‹

"I hope." She's quiet for a moment. "What about you?"

โ€‹

"What about me?"

โ€‹

"Are you really staying? After the album's delivered? Or that job in Glasgow?"

โ€‹

The sits uncomfortably between us.

โ€‹

I pull back enough to look at her properly.

โ€‹

"Do you want me to stay?"

โ€‹

"Yes." No hesitation. "But I don't want you to stay just because I'm asking. I want you to stay because you want to. Because this—" she gestures between us "—is something you actually want."

โ€‹

"It is."

โ€‹

"You're sure? Because once the album's done you don't have any obligation to—"

โ€‹

"Lila." I wait until she stops talking. "I'm not here out of obligation. I'm here because I love you. Because I want to be here. That doesn't change just because the album's finished."

โ€‹

Relief floods her expression.

โ€‹

"Okay," she says quietly. "Good."

โ€‹

"But I need something from you."

โ€‹

She goes still. "What?"

โ€‹

"I need you to keep letting me in. Not just when things are at crisis point. Not just when you're drowning. All of it. The boring bits and the hard bits and the times when everything's fine."

โ€‹

"That's terrifying."

โ€‹

"I know."

โ€‹

"What if I forget? What if I default to managing everything alone when things get stressful?"

โ€‹

"Then I'll remind you. And you'll try again. That's how this works."

โ€‹

She studies my face like she's looking for proof I mean it.

โ€‹

"Okay," she says finally. "I can do that."

โ€‹

"Promise?"

โ€‹

"Promise."

โ€‹

I kiss her gently.

โ€‹

She responds immediately. Hands sliding up into my hair. Body pressing closer.

โ€‹

We break apart after a moment.

โ€‹

"You tired?" I ask.

โ€‹

"Exhausted."

โ€‹

"Bed then."

โ€‹

"Together?"

โ€‹

"Yeah. Together."

โ€‹

She takes my hand and leads me to the bedroom.

โ€‹

The room’s as I remember it, but somehow tidier.

โ€‹

Efficient, very Lila.

โ€‹

We get ready for bed in comfortable silence, the particular intimacy of sharing space without needing to fill it with words. When we finally settle under the covers, Lila immediately tucks herself against my chest.

โ€‹

"Jax?" she says quietly.

โ€‹

"Yeah?"

โ€‹

"Thank you."

โ€‹

"For what?"

โ€‹

"For staying. For coming back. For making me believe this could actually work."

โ€‹

"You did the hard part. I just showed up."

โ€‹

"You did more than show up."

โ€‹

I press a kiss to her hair. "Get some sleep."

โ€‹

"In a minute."

โ€‹

But her breathing is already slowing. Deepening.

โ€‹

I hold her while she drifts off and begin processing everything that happened today.

โ€‹

The album finished. The celebration. Dusty appearing and Sam’s reaction and Lila choosing connection over control. All of it adding up to something that feels like actual progress.

โ€‹

Not perfect, but real and somehow that's enough.

โ€‹

My phone buzzes on the bedside table and I reach for it carefully without disturbing Lila.

โ€‹

Paul's name on the screen. A text: Sam's okay. Staying at mine tonight. Didn't want to be alone.

I type back one-handed: Good. Keep me posted.

His response comes immediately: Will do. You and Lila good?

Yeah.

Good. You're both less terrifying when you're not slowly imploding.

โ€‹

I nearly laugh out loud.

โ€‹

Thanks Paul.

Anytime boss.

โ€‹

I put the phone down and pull Lila closer. Tomorrow will bring new complications. New pressures. The particular chaos of moving from creation into promotion. But tonight—right now—we have this.

โ€‹

Each other.

โ€‹

Finally on solid ground.

โ€‹

And that feels like everything.

โ€‹

Lila

I wake up to sunlight streaming through the bedroom curtains and Jax's mouth on my neck. For a moment I just lie there. His lips trace the line from my ear to my shoulder. Slow. Deliberate. Not demanding anything yet.

โ€‹

Just touching me because he can.

โ€‹

My phone buzzes on the bedside table.

โ€‹

I turn my head toward it automatically.

โ€‹

Jax's hand slides across my stomach, pulling me back against him. "Don't."

โ€‹

"I should—"

โ€‹

"You shouldn't."

โ€‹

His palm is warm through the thin fabric of my shirt. His thumb brushes the underside of my breast.

โ€‹

I forget what I was reaching for.

โ€‹

"That's better," he murmurs against my skin.

โ€‹

His hand moves higher. Cups me properly. I'm not wearing a bra—haven't been since he undressed me last night—and the friction of cotton and his palm makes me inhale sharply.

โ€‹

"Jax."

โ€‹

"Hmm?"

โ€‹

It's not a protest.

โ€‹

He knows it's not a protest.

โ€‹

His thumb finds my nipple through the fabric. Circles once. Twice.

โ€‹

I arch into his hand before I can stop myself.

โ€‹

"There you are," he says quietly.

โ€‹

I want to argue. Want to point out that I have things to do today. That we need to get up eventually. That I should check my phone because Hannah sent three messages and that usually means something needs immediate attention.

โ€‹

But Jax's other hand is sliding down my hip now. Taking the hem of my shirt with it. His fingers find bare skin.

โ€‹

I stop thinking about my phone.

โ€‹

"This okay?" he asks.

โ€‹

"Yes."

โ€‹

"You sure? Because you looked like you were about to start mentally organizing your entire day."

โ€‹

"I wasn't—"

โ€‹

"You were." His hand slides higher, taking the shirt with it. "But we're going to work on that."

โ€‹

He pulls the shirt over my head and I let him.

โ€‹

I'm bare from the waist up now. Exposed in morning light and there's a moment where every instinct tells me to cover myself. To take back control of the situation. To—

โ€‹

Jax's mouth finds the back of my shoulder. Then lower, tracing my spine.

โ€‹

I forget what I was thinking.

โ€‹

He turns me carefully until I'm facing him. His eyes move over me, Not clinical or detached, just looking.

โ€‹

"You're beautiful," he says.

โ€‹

I want to deflect and make a joke. Say something about how he's clearly still half asleep, but the way he's looking at me makes the words stick in my throat.

โ€‹

"Come here," he says.

โ€‹

I shift closer and his mouth finds mine.

โ€‹

It starts slow. Almost careful.

โ€‹

Then his hand slides into my hair and the kiss deepens.

โ€‹

I press against him and feel that he's already hard.

โ€‹

My hand moves between us. Finds him through his boxers.

โ€‹

He makes a low sound against my mouth.

โ€‹

"Okay?" I ask.

โ€‹

"Very okay."

โ€‹

I stroke him once through the fabric. His hips shift into my hand.

โ€‹

"Lila."

โ€‹

"What?"

โ€‹

"If you keep doing that, this is going to be over embarrassingly fast."

โ€‹

"I don't mind."

โ€‹

"I do." He catches my wrist gently. Pulls my hand away. "Not yet."

โ€‹

"What then?"

โ€‹

Instead of answering, he rolls me onto my back.

โ€‹

Settles between my legs.

โ€‹

His mouth finds my collarbone. Then goes lower.

โ€‹

When he reaches my breast I stop breathing.

โ€‹

His tongue traces around my nipple once before he takes it into his mouth.

โ€‹

The sound I make doesn't seem like something I would make.

โ€‹

But Jax makes that low approving hum and does it again.

โ€‹

His hand moves down my stomach. Slow. Giving me time to object.

โ€‹

I don't object.

โ€‹

His fingers find the waistband of my underwear. Pause there.

โ€‹

"Yes or no?"

โ€‹

"Yes," I breathe.

โ€‹

He slides them down and I lift my hips to help.

โ€‹

Then I'm completely naked and he's still partly dressed and somehow that makes this more intense.

โ€‹

His hand moves up my inner thigh.

โ€‹

I tense automatically.

โ€‹

"Breathe," he says against my breast.

โ€‹

I breathe.

โ€‹

His fingers brush between my legs.

โ€‹

"Already wet," he murmurs. "Were you awake before I was?"

โ€‹

"Maybe."

โ€‹

"Thinking about this?"

โ€‹

"Maybe."

โ€‹

"Just maybe?"

โ€‹

I’m not admitting I was arranging my day…not right now.

โ€‹

His finger slides inside me and I stop being able to form coherent responses.

โ€‹

He works me slowly. Carefully. Paying attention to every reaction.

โ€‹

When he adds a second finger I hear myself moan.

โ€‹

His thumb finds my clit. Circles.

โ€‹

"Jax—"

โ€‹

"I know."

โ€‹

"I'm going to—"

โ€‹

"Good."

โ€‹

He doesn't speed up, doesn't change rhythm, just keeps that steady, devastating pressure until I fall apart around his hand.

โ€‹

The orgasm rolls through me in waves.

โ€‹

I grab his shoulder, his arm, anything to anchor myself.

โ€‹

He works me through it until I'm shaking and oversensitive and pulling at his wrist.

โ€‹

"Okay," I manage. "Okay."

โ€‹

He withdraws slowly, with great care.

โ€‹

Then kisses me while I'm still trying to catch my breath.

โ€‹

When I can think again, I reach for him.

โ€‹

"Your turn."

โ€‹

"You don't have to—"

โ€‹

"I know I don't have to."

โ€‹

I push him onto his back and he goes easily. I kiss him once and then I move down his body, admiring the map of ink across his skin.

โ€‹

His stomach muscles tense when I press my mouth just above the waistband of his boxers.

โ€‹

"Lila."

โ€‹

"Hmm?"

โ€‹

"You really don't—"

โ€‹

I pull his boxers down.

โ€‹

Take him in my hand properly.

โ€‹

Whatever he was going to say dissolves into a low groan.

โ€‹

I stroke him slowly. Learning what makes his breath catch, where to tighten my grip.

โ€‹

"That's—yeah. Like that."

โ€‹

โ€‹

I lean down and take him in my mouth.

His hand moves to my hair. Not pushing, only touching.

โ€‹

"Fuck. Lila—"

โ€‹

I work him carefully, using my hand where my mouth can't reach.

โ€‹

His hips shift slightly. Testing me, asking permission.

โ€‹

I hum approval and he thrusts shallowly into my mouth.

โ€‹

"I'm not going to last," he warns.

โ€‹

Good.

โ€‹

I want him to fall apart the way I just did.

โ€‹

I take him deeper and his grip tightens in my hair.

โ€‹

"Lila, I'm—"

โ€‹

He tries to pull back, I think about not letting him, but I let him anyway.

โ€‹

He fumbles around in clothes on the floor, finds protection and rolls it down his hard shaft.

โ€‹

I position myself over him.

โ€‹

Lowering gently, enjoying the sensation of him filling me.

โ€‹

His eyes never leave mine.

โ€‹

Before I can decide how deep to take him, he flips me over and pushes himself into me.

โ€‹

“Christ,” he moans.

โ€‹

I throw my legs around him. Pulling him into me, constantly aware at the edge of my consciousness that the day awaits.

โ€‹

It can wait.

โ€‹

Jax plunges deeper inside me, pushing me to the edge again.

โ€‹

I lose myself in us.

Body slipping into the rhythm of him.

โ€‹

I shudder.

โ€‹

“Jax…” my body convulses around him.

โ€‹

He comes with a low groan and a shivering vulnerability I can't unsee.

โ€‹

When I finally release my legs from around him, he's breathing hard.

โ€‹

He flips off me and stares at the ceiling.

โ€‹

"Christ."

โ€‹

I move back up beside him.

โ€‹

"Good?"

โ€‹

"You're going to kill me."

โ€‹

"That's not an answer."

โ€‹

He turns his head to look at me. "That was extremely good and you know it."

โ€‹

I smile.

โ€‹

He reaches for me and pulls me up onto his chest.

โ€‹

We lie there while our breathing settles.

โ€‹

My phone buzzes again

.

This time I don't reach for it.

โ€‹

"Progress," Jax says.

โ€‹

"Don't get used to it."

โ€‹

"Too late."

โ€‹

His hand traces lazy patterns on my back.

โ€‹

I should get up, should shower and start preparing for the studio session at eleven. But everything feels warm and heavy and right in ways I'm not used to. So I stay.

โ€‹

"What are you thinking?" Jax asks after a while.

โ€‹

"That I'm terrible at this."

โ€‹

"At what?"

โ€‹

"This. Morning domesticity. Being present instead of already three steps ahead."

โ€‹

"You're doing fine."

โ€‹

"I just had sex with you and immediately started mentally reviewing my schedule for today."

โ€‹

"Yeah, but you stopped yourself. That's what matters."

โ€‹

I consider this and decide he's not wrong.

โ€‹

"I'm still going to be a disaster sometimes," I say.

โ€‹

"I know."

โ€‹

"And there are going to be days where I'm terrible at letting you help and want to manage everything alone."

โ€‹

"I know that too."

โ€‹

"But you're staying anyway?"

โ€‹

He's quiet.

โ€‹

Then, "Yeah. I'm staying anyway."

โ€‹

Something warm settles in my chest.

โ€‹

Not panic, or the need to control or plan or protect myself.

โ€‹

Just quiet certainty.

โ€‹

"Okay," I say.

โ€‹

"Okay."

โ€‹

We stay like that until my alarm goes off at nine.

โ€‹

Time to return to the real world.

โ€‹

But this time I'm not going back alone.

Marty & Pet (Breakup)

Marty & Pet

Pet

โ€‹

The walk back to the house was a blur of sun-warmed skin and salt-kissed lips.

โ€‹

Marty’s hand never left mine, his thumb tracing circles over my knuckles like he was memorizing the shape of me all over again. The ring felt heavy on my finger—not from the weight of the silver, but from the promise it carried.

โ€‹

By the time we reached the bedroom, the last of the sunset had bled into twilight, painting the room in soft blues and purples. Marty shut the door behind us with a quiet click, then pressed me against it, his body caging me in. His mouth found mine, slow and deep, like he had all the time in the world.

โ€‹

“You’re mine now,” he murmured against my lips, his voice rough with something darker than usual—possession, yes, but also reverence. “Officially.”

โ€‹

I smirked, tilting my head back to give him better access to my throat. “I’ve been yours for a while, Campbell.”

โ€‹

His teeth grazed my collarbone, just sharp enough to make me gasp. “Not like this.”

โ€‹

The words sent a shiver down my spine. I loved him like this—when the quiet, steady man who held me through storms let something feral slip through. Not cruel, never that, but hungry. Like he could devour me and still want more.โ€‹

I pushed him back just enough to yank his damp shirt over his head, my fingers swept across his chest, seeking out the familiar warmth of his body. “Prove it.”

โ€‹

His breath hitched. Then his hands were on me, dragging my sundress up and over my head in one smooth motion. The cool air raised goosebumps on my skin, but his mouth was hot as it followed the path his fingers had just taken—over my ribs, the dip of my waist, the swell of my hips.

โ€‹

“Fuck, Pet,” he groaned, dropping to his knees in front of me. His hands gripped my thighs, fingers digging in just enough to leave marks as he pressed his lips to the inside of my knee. “You’re so goddamn beautiful.”

โ€‹

I ran my fingers through his damp hair, guiding him higher. “Less talking.”

โ€‹

He chuckled, the vibration of it making me shudder, before his tongue dragged up the inside of my thigh, slow and deliberate. When he finally reached where I was aching for him, he didn’t rush. He took his time—teasing, tasting, learning me all over again like it was the first time. His fingers joined his mouth, curling inside me in a familiar rhythm that had my knees trembling.

โ€‹

“Marty—” His name broke on a moan, my hips rocking against his face. He hummed in response, the sound sending another wave of pleasure through me.

โ€‹

“That’s it,” he murmured, pulling back just enough to speak. “Let me hear you.”

โ€‹

I came with a cry, my fingers clutching at his shoulders as he worked me through it. Before I could even catch my breath, he was on his feet, lifting me and carrying me to our bed.

โ€‹

He laid me down like I was something precious, then stripped off the rest of his clothes, his movements urgent now. When he settled between my legs, I wrapped them around his familiar waist, pulling him down to kiss me. I could taste myself on his lips and the filthiness of it sent a thrill through me.

โ€‹

“Need you,” I whispered.

โ€‹

He didn’t make me wait. He slid into me in one smooth thrust, both of us groaning at the sensation. For a moment, he just stayed there, forehead pressed to mine, our eyes locked together, time suspended.

โ€‹

“Love you,” he said, voice rough. “So fucking much.”

โ€‹

I kissed him, slow and deep, as he began to move.

โ€‹

There was no rush, no frantic pace—just the steady, perfect rhythm of two people who knew exactly how to fit together. His hands were everywhere, in my hair, gripping my hip, thumb brushing over my nipple—each touch sending shivers through me.

โ€‹

“Harder,” I gasped and he obeyed, snapping his hips forward in a way that made my vision blur. I clawed at his back, my body coiling tight around him.

โ€‹

“Come on, love,” he murmured, his lips against my ear. “Come for me again.”

โ€‹

I did, my back arching off the bed as intense waves of pleasure crashed over me. Marty followed with a shudder and then a loud groan, burying his face in my neck as he surrendered to his own release.

โ€‹

For a long moment, neither of us moved. Then he rolled to the side, pulling me with him so I was sprawled half on top of him, my head resting over his heart.

โ€‹

“That,” I said, once I could speak again, “was a hell of a way to celebrate an engagement.”

โ€‹

He laughed, low and satisfied, his hands stilling on my bare back. “Just wait till the wedding night.”

โ€‹

I propped myself up on my elbow to look at him, grinning. “Promises, promises.”

โ€‹

His expression softened, his hand tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear. “Forever, Pet. That’s the only promise that matters.”

I kissed him, slow and sweet, savouring the taste of salt and sex on his lips.

โ€‹

Forever sounded perfect.

โ€‹

The room was quiet save for the sound of the ocean and our breathing. Marty’s fingers hovered on the curve of my spine, his touch light, almost absentminded, like he was memorizing the shape of me. I pressed closer, my leg twisted with his, my head still resting over his heart.

โ€‹

“Do you think he knew?” I asked softly, my thoughts drifting to the memorial garden, to the stone bearing my father’s name. “About us, I mean. Do you think he would’ve liked you?”

โ€‹

Marty’s hand stilled for a moment before resuming its slow path up and down my back. “I don’t know,” he said quietly. “But I like to think so. I like to think he’d see how much I love you and know that I’d do anything to keep you safe. To make you happy.”

โ€‹

I swallowed past the sudden tightness in my throat. “He would’ve loved your music,” I said, my voice thick. “He would’ve loved the way you play. The way you feel it.”

โ€‹

Marty pressed a kiss to my temple. “And he would’ve loved the way you sing. The way you carry his legacy without letting it weigh you down.”

โ€‹

I closed my eyes, letting the truth of his words sink in. It was something I’d struggled with for so long—the fear that I was only a shadow of my father, that my voice was just an echo of his. But Marty had always seen me as my own person, my own artist. He’d been the one to remind me that I could honour my father without losing myself in the process.

โ€‹

“What do you think he’d say about the Foundation?” I asked, a small smile tugging at my lips. “About the mentorship program?”

โ€‹

Marty’s chest rumbled with a quiet laugh. “I think he’d say it’s about damn time.” His fingers traced the shell of my ear, his touch feather-light. “And I think he’d be proud as hell of you for turning all that pain into something good. Into something that’ll help other people.”

I nodded, my throat tight. “I hope so.”

โ€‹

We lay in silence for a while, listening to the distant waves and the occasional creak of the house settling.

โ€‹

“What do you want for the wedding?” Marty asked suddenly, his voice breaking the quiet. “Big? Small? Here, or somewhere else?”

โ€‹

I thought about it for a moment, imagining the possibilities. A grand affair in Los Angeles, with all the industry connections and media attention? A quiet ceremony on this very beach, with only our closest friends and family? Somewhere in between?

โ€‹

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I just know I want it to feel like us. Like our music. Like this.” I gestured vaguely to the room, to the ocean beyond the window, to the way our bodies fit together so perfectly.

โ€‹

Marty’s hand found mine, his fingers intertwining with mine, the ring catching what was left of the early evening light.

“Then that’s what we’ll do,” he said simply. “However you want it, Pet. As long as I get to marry you at the end of it, I don’t care about the rest.”

โ€‹

I turned my head to press a kiss to his shoulder, my lips lingering against his warm skin. “You’re going to make me cry,” I murmured.

โ€‹

“No crying,” he said, his voice teasing but gentle. “Not tonight. Tonight’s for this.” He shifted slightly, rolling me onto my back and hovering over me, his elbows bracketing my head. His eyes were dark in the dim light, but I could see the warmth in them, the love that never failed to take my breath away. “Tonight’s for us.”

โ€‹

And then he was kissing me again, slow and deep, his body pressing into mine, the weight of him familiar and perfect. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, losing myself in the feel of him, in the taste of him, in the way he made me feel like I was the only person in the world.

โ€‹

This was what I wanted forever to feel like. Not just the passion, not just the love, but this—this quiet, this certainty, this sense of coming home.

---

Later, when the moon was high and the house was silent, I found myself standing at the window, the curtain pulled back just enough to let in the cool night air. Marty was asleep behind me, his breathing steady and deep, his arm still draped over the space where I usually lay, like even in sleep, he couldn’t bear to let me go.

โ€‹

I looked out at the ocean, the waves a dark, shifting mass under the moonlight. Somewhere out there, my father’s spirit was at peace. I liked to think he was watching over me, over us, that he could see the life Marty and I had built, the love we’d found, the good we were doing in his name.

โ€‹

“I miss you,” I whispered, my breath fogging the glass slightly. “But I’m happy, Dad. I promise. And I’m going to keep fighting for the things you believed in. I’m going to keep making music that matters. I’m going to keep loving this man who loves me so well.”

โ€‹

A gust of wind rattled the window and for a moment, I could’ve sworn I felt a touch against my cheek, warm as a memory, but light as a feather. I closed my eyes, letting the sensation wash over me, letting myself believe, just for a second, that it was him—my father, my first hero and my greatest loss.

โ€‹

When I opened my eyes again, the ocean was still there, endless and beautiful and so was Marty, his presence a steady rock I’d anchored my life around.

I let the curtain fall back into place and climbed back into bed, slipping under the covers and back into his arms.

โ€‹

He murmured something in his sleep, his hold tightening slightly and I pressed a kiss to his shoulder, my lips curving into a smile.

โ€‹

Forever started now.

Paul & Ashley (Style)

Paul & Ashley

Ashley

I lay on the hospital bed in the plush private hospital suite that Paul had insisted on booking. My baby bump had morphed into a tight basketball and I tried to breathe through the contraction the way my birthing coach had shown me.

Hours sitting on the floor on a yoga mat with Paul behind me had done little to prepare me for the prospect of bringing a tiny little human being into the world.

Paul hovered around the bed. “Are you okay? This one’s not hurting too much is it?”

I shook my head. “No. I’m coping,” I reassured him. “Well, for now.”

As the pressure receded and my body began to relax, I thought about the twists and turns my life had taken over the last forty weeks. The journey to this point had not been without its complications and heart-felt moments.

My mom and dad were sitting anxiously back in Seattle waiting to hear how things were going. Paul had insisted he would fly them out here to New Zealand—but they’d refused his offer—adamant they would rather wait until we returned to the States to visit with their newest grand-baby.

The road to acceptance of Paul into my family had been a tough one.

As another contraction began to build and I took a deep, slow breath, I closed my eyes and focussed on the memory of the look on my dear parents’ faces when Paul walked through the door.

โ€‹

My mom didn’t have to say the words, but I could see the shock painted on her fine features.

“How Do You Do,” she’d said the strain of polite-speak overriding the rising panic I could see marching its way up her body.

โ€‹

Paul had done his best. He’d worn a long sleeved shirt with a collar that he’d done up close to his throat. But that still didn’t hide the ink on his body that crept down his wrists and up his neck.

โ€‹

Dad had been more forthright and genuinely welcomed Paul into his home—that is until he found out I was pregnant and heading off to lord-only-knew where on the road with a rock band.

โ€‹

There was a moment during the strained meeting that I thought Dad might have taken a swing at Paul, but somehow, Paul’s British charm had won them both over.

โ€‹

He’d made promises that he would look after me and the child that I carried.

โ€‹

That went some way with my father. Dad respected men who took responsibility for their actions. Paul may have been a tiny bit reticent in coming forward in the father stakes to start—but I couldn’t fault him now.

โ€‹

The many weeks we’d spent on the road. The shows in various cities. Thousands of miles and thousands of fans and all the while Paul had kept my comfort and the safety of our child in the forefront of his mind.

โ€‹

The band—with their difficult characters, quirky ways and outrageous behaviour had slowly become my family over the last thirty-something weeks.

โ€‹

The increasing pain of the contraction began to curl its way through my body and I moaned as I exhaled.

โ€‹

Paul was at my side in an instant, his hand on the hard ball of muscle that my stomach had become.

โ€‹

I tried to smile—but the pain began to take me.

โ€‹

The sound of Paul singing one of Sam’s songs drifted into my hearing, the familiar words somehow comforting.

โ€‹

A camera recorded proceedings from the corner of the birthing suite.

โ€‹

It was something that we’d agreed we would do to take away the monotony of waiting for our baby to come.

โ€‹

After that fateful afternoon when I first appeared on Paul’s channel, things had changed. We’d allowed his fans to come on this journey of discovery with the two of us.

โ€‹

It had surprised me how many of Paul’s fans seemed genuinely interested in my life on the road with the band and who wanted to be a part of our growing family.

โ€‹

I’d even taken to making little vignettes and episodes for the channel and they received some of the highest hit rates and interactions.

โ€‹

The journey to birth was something that the fans and my parents were experiencing via the internet and Paul’s channel. If anyone had told me more than nine months ago that I would be sharing such intimate moments with a crowd of strangers, I would have told them that they were insane.

โ€‹

Instead, I sat here—waiting for the pain to peak and then recede—listening to Paul’s singing and knowing that there were thousands of people out there holding me and our child in their thoughts and prayers.

โ€‹

I found both Paul’s singing and the prayers of our fans incredibly comforting, as I stared into the uncharted and terrifying spectre of impending birth.

โ€‹

* * *

Paul

I knew I had to be strong for Ashley’s sake—but inside I was fucking terrified.

โ€‹

Every time she moaned in pain, I wanted to take it away for her.

โ€‹

How the fuck could I make this easy for her?

โ€‹

I’d done my best to fix things for Ashley. I’d put in for official leave from the tour. Julian had approved the leave and arranged for us to come back to New Zealand, where he believed we’d get great birth assistance. I had no idea the loops that his lawyers had gone through to get us here, but I was grateful to be in this wonderful suite with the best doctors and nurses that the country had to offer.

โ€‹

We’d been here for nearly two days. Holed up in this birth suite. To start it had been okay. We’d walked the halls. I’d listened to the terrifying sound of the screams of other women giving birth and tried not to panic for Ashley’s sake.

โ€‹

I was way out of my depth and would have much rather been on the road with the band. But, I was responsible for the predicament that Ashley found herself in and I’d made her a promise that I wouldn’t walk away and I’d always been a man of my word.

โ€‹

“Do you need drugs?” If Ashley didn’t need drugs, I could certainly do with something to take the edge off. I’d even considered asking the nurses for some relief over the last few hours—but then I’d told myself to get a grip.

โ€‹

“Distract me,” Ashley moaned as she pulled her legs up under herself and bent the rest of her body around the solid lump that the wriggling babe inside of her had become.

โ€‹

I flipped through my phone and found “Come on Eileen,” by Dexys Midnight Runners and started singing along.

Ashley moaned louder.

โ€‹

I put my hand on her shoulder.

โ€‹

“Don’t fucking touch me,” she snapped.

โ€‹

I pulled my hand away as if it had been burned.

โ€‹

Rage began to rise from my feet. How dare she tell me not to touch her. Then a small voice in the back of my head reminded me of what the birth coach had said. Some women didn’t want to be touched when they were going through labour. I had to take my lead from Ashley.

โ€‹

“Keep singing…” she said through gritted teeth.

โ€‹

That I could do.

โ€‹

The words flowed and I watched as the sound of my voice seemed somehow to calm her. I couldn’t touch her body, but I could let my voice do the work.

โ€‹

As the pain of the contraction receded, Ashley opened her eyes and reached out a hand to me and I took it. A sense of relief washing over me.

โ€‹

Not for the first time in the last forty-eight hours I wished I was standing on stage with the boys. I thought that was hard work until I’d stood beside Ashley watching her toil toward birthing our child.

โ€‹

I was going to be a dad.

โ€‹

Fuck!

โ€‹

The thought still terrified me.

โ€‹

But somehow I knew that I’d be able to step up and make it through being a parent. Especially with the sensible Ashley by my side.

โ€‹

We had a few moments before the next contraction came. They were coming quickly now.

โ€‹

“Show me the last video,” Ashley said. She’d taken a sip of water, but the midwife still thought it best to keep her liquid levels up intravenously. I was grateful for the lure that sat in her arm, attached to a large bag of saline that kept her body hydrated.

โ€‹

I flicked up the shots of her bearing down and me dancing around the room to Dexys Midnight Runners. She laughed.

โ€‹

“That’s so funny.”

โ€‹

“How the hell you can laugh at a time like this.” I shook my head in wonder.

โ€‹

“Post it for them,” she said and then moaned. “It might be the last one before the baby gets here.”

โ€‹

“You want the nurse?”

โ€‹

“Yes,” she panted.

โ€‹

I pressed the buzzer and waited for all hell to break loose around me.

โ€‹

* * *

Ashley

My entire body was on fire.

When I didn’t think I could stand the burning anymore it began to recede.

โ€‹

“Push,” Nina’s voice the midwife who had been with me for the last three hours came to me through the intense pain.

โ€‹

“I can’t do this,” I panted.

โ€‹

“Yes you can,” the reassuring sound of Paul’s voice cut through the painful fog.

โ€‹

“Hold me.”

โ€‹

His body was behind me in an instant.

โ€‹

“I’ve got you and you’ve got this.” The reassuring tone of Paul’s voice gave me strength. I was exhausted. It felt as if I’d been doing this for hours.

โ€‹

“I’m tired.” I could feel the tears rolling down my face. My body had taken on a life of its own. I was frightened. “I need something for the pain,” I said.

โ€‹

“You’re nearly there,” Nina soothed.

โ€‹

I was sure she’d been saying that all afternoon.

“When the next contraction comes,” Nina said, “one more big push.”

โ€‹

Paul’s comforting arms slipped around my body.

โ€‹

I focused on the colour of the ink on his arms. The bright reds, yellows and blues swimming into each other as the pain took my body again.

โ€‹

“Push!”

โ€‹

I pressed my feet hard against the braces in front of them, felt the comforting support of Paul from behind, took a deep breath, closed my eyes and pushed.

โ€‹

The overwhelming burning sensation began again.

โ€‹

I let out a moan.

โ€‹

“Here comes the shoulder,” I heard someone say.

โ€‹

I pushed again.

โ€‹

Then something amazing happened.  My body filled with an intense sense of relief as my baby swooshed out of me.

โ€‹

I leaned back against, Paul panting.

โ€‹

He slid to the side of me. I looked up and saw tears rolling down his face.

โ€‹

“What’s wrong?” Fear gripped me again.

โ€‹

“Nothing,” his voice sounded hoarse through the tears.

โ€‹

I heard the sound of a baby.

โ€‹

“He’s perfect,” Nina said as she lay a damp, mewling newborn on my stomach.

โ€‹

“Hello,” I said to my tiny baby. A single blue eye peered back at me.

โ€‹

“He’s his father’s son,” I looked up at Paul who still stared down at the two of us with a look of what? I couldn’t describe the way he looked at me and his newborn son.

โ€‹

Tears began to fall down my face.

โ€‹

Paul kissed me. A gentle, tender kiss, his hand alternately stroking my shoulder and our son’s back.

โ€‹

“You’re amazing,” he whispered.

โ€‹

I didn’t feel amazing—exhausted maybe—but not amazing. I was too tired to feel anything really.

โ€‹

We’d brought this tiny, frail human being into the world. He had been my focus for the last nine months and now I wasn’t quite sure what to do—except maybe cry.

โ€‹

But, I realised, we were a family now. Not only did we have our family on the road—but me and Paul and our son—we were a real a family.

โ€‹

* * *

Paul

It had been less than six hours since Ashley had given birth and she was up and walking around the suite, a tiny bundle in her arms.

โ€‹

My son.

โ€‹

The thought still seemed strange and otherworldly.

โ€‹

I was a dad

.

And I was going to make sure that I was a fucking sight better dad than my own father had been. I would be here for this child. I would make sure that neither he nor Ashley wanted for anything.

โ€‹

I shot a vignette of the two of them walking.

โ€‹

I posted it to the channel and before I had a chance to show the film to Ashley, we already had congratulations coming in from around the world.

โ€‹

We’d been on the computer to her parents. Woken them in the middle of the night, but they hadn’t cared.

โ€‹

The thought that my mum would never know her grandson hurt. But I felt sure that mum would be looking over me.

She’d have loved Ashley as much as I loved Ashley.

โ€‹

“Look,” I walked to Ash and showed her the response from our fans.

โ€‹

“They want to know what we’ve called him,” she said as she smiled at me. “Let’s make them wait.”

โ€‹

“You’re horrible.”

โ€‹

“Just for a little while,” she said.

โ€‹

I nodded. “Okay.”

โ€‹

I stroked the fine dark hair on my son’s head and he opened one blue eye and looked at me. “Do you think he’ll ever open that other eye?” I asked his mother.

โ€‹

“I’m sure he will,” she said, “when he’s ready. He’ll come to it, in his own time, just like his father.”

Julian

Julian's Point-of-View

I gave up counting many years ago the number of times I’d flown in by chopper to a rock concert. The first time had been a buzz. Thousands of my fans, waiting to greet me, Julian MacAvoy, rock star. I still struggled to come to terms with my fame some days.

โ€‹

The woman sitting opposite me today, however, was experiencing this particular thrill for the first time.

As the chopper’s rotors abated, the sound was replaced by the roar of my fans screaming for me. Years ago I would have been on a high hearing the roar of the crowd. Today, the only sound I wanted to hear was the woman sitting opposite me calling my name as I made her come.

Mags O’Brien looked at me with wonder in those big brown eyes.

โ€‹

“It’s amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.

The medieval castle, the backdrop for this particular gig loomed on the horizon. The stone structure looked as bleak and dark as my mood.

โ€‹

“All right for you,” I said to Mags trying my best not to be morose. “You don’t have to get up there and perform in front of the fuckers.”โ€‹

I was scared.

โ€‹

I was always scared before a show.

โ€‹

I didn’t want to admit it to anyone, but they all knew what was going through my mind. Everyone did their best to ignore it and I guess I had to be grateful for that. I’d heard them whispering in the corridors, make-him-or-break-him time they dubbed it.

โ€‹

Every show for a long time, regular as clockwork, I’d eat and then I’d bring it back up. So I started fuelling myself on a concoction of chocolate and caffeine—but I’d bring that back up before I stepped on stage.

Nothing settled my nerves.

But the woman sitting opposite me. I knew that she could go a long way towards settling me down. Only she wasn’t available.

Married to another fucking man.

I wondered what kind of a man would let a gorgeous creature like Mags out on tour with someone like me?

He must be an idiot.

โ€‹

If she was mine, I’d never let her out of my sight.

โ€‹

We’d stepped out of the screaming chopper and were making our way to the labyrinth of tent-like structures that served as backstage.

โ€‹

“Mags!” I heard Frederick bellow across the heads of the people surrounding us, “Get Jules settled, would you?”

โ€‹

Like the dutiful wife that she probably was to the jerk who’d let her come on tour with me, she grabbed my hand and said, “Come on, Jules.” She led me through the maze of tents and found the portacom with my initials on the door. I made sure they were plastered everywhere. My initials adorned my musical instruments, the chopper that had just dropped us to site and every piece of damn equipment that came with us on tour.

โ€‹

I’d worked my ass off to get here and I was going to make sure that everyone knew who they were dealing with.

โ€‹

“Mags, don’t you ever get sick of spending hours with me in these fucking igloos?” I tore my hoodie off my head and threw my dark glasses on the wooden table that housed the supply of fruit and chocolate that had been stipulated on my rider.

โ€‹

I scanned the room, looking for the coffee machine. “Where’s my fucking mug?”

โ€‹

“Here,” she said, like a breath of fresh spring air. My moodiness and my demands that had driven my last assistant to the bottle never seemed to phase Mags.

โ€‹

After pouring the fresh, steaming coffee into my favourite Rosenthal mug I made my way to the table and began to break up a bar of chocolate. I liked to start at the centre of the table and lay each piece out in an ever increasing spiral.

Then I’d start eating the chocolate from the outside piece and work my way back to the centre. Some days I made it all the way to the middle and other days I didn’t. I wondered how far I’d get today as I washed the first piece down with a mouthful of coffee.

โ€‹

Some guys got pissed before they went on stage and then finished the job after the show. I couldn’t stand alcohol or drugs. I’d watched what they did to my brother and I wasn’t ever going there.

โ€‹

“I’ve checked your kit,” Mags said. “It’s all here. You ready to get suited up?”

โ€‹

“Nup.” I liked playing this game with Mags before every show. I knew we had the back-stage-meet-and-greet to get through and bantering with her about whether or not I’d do anything on time kept my nerves at bay.

โ€‹

“Thirty minutes to meet-and-greet,” she said. “You need to be dressed nicely for the fans.” She motioned for me to follow her toward the wardrobe rack.

โ€‹

“Where’s your manners?” I couldn’t help flashing her one of my killer grins and I watched her melt.

“Please,” she said. The way she said the word made my dick twitch. I was determined that I’d have this woman in my bed before this tour was done.

โ€‹

“Who’s coming today?” I asked trying to keep my mind on the job at hand. I ate a third piece of chocolate and sluiced it down with another mouthful of coffee.

โ€‹

I watched her fish out the daily schedule prepared by my tour manager, Dan. The two of them ran the tour like a military operation. “Two fourteen-year-olds from the local radio station.”

โ€‹

I winced. Teenage girls were a bloody nightmare back stage. “Any chance they might be bringing yummy mummies with them?”

โ€‹

Her face flickered at my words, just for a moment and then she recomposed herself. Maybe Ms Mag’s marriage might not be the fairytale she liked everyone to believe it to be.

โ€‹

“They have escorts, yes.”

โ€‹

“And the other four?”

She checked her notes again before looking up at me, her face unreadable, “Twenty-three-year-old and twenty-seven-year-old.”

โ€‹

“Sounds promising.”

โ€‹

“Males from the local wheelchair basketball team.”

โ€‹

“Bugger!”

โ€‹

I could tell by the look on her face that she wasn’t enjoying the game. But why? We did this night after night. Pretending that we didn’t find each other attractive. How long was she going to deny that there was an undeniable tension between the two of us?

โ€‹

“Tell me you’re saving the best for last—I’m still missing two.” I cocked my head to the side.

โ€‹

Mags looked away from me and back at her notes, “A couple of twenty-somethings that Ted took a shine to at the local club last night. He think they might be right up your alley.”

โ€‹

“Pay dirt!” At the sound of my words, she looked up at me. I wanted to tell her that we didn’t have to play this game anymore. Instead I said, “The dirty bastard hasn’t shagged them already has he? You know how grubby drummers are.”

โ€‹

“You’d best go ask him—he’s three doors down on your left.” She motioned for me to leave and I thought that might be the best solution tonight.

โ€‹

“I shall,” I said. Grabbing a handful of chocolate I made my way to the dressing room of one of my closest friends and wondered how many more nights Mags and I would have to play this ridiculous game.

โ€‹

* * *

After I’d gotten the lowdown from Ted about the two scorchers he’d met last night I made my way back to my dressing room.

โ€‹

Some nights I felt as if I was simply going through the motions. I knew that the woman I really wanted was in my dressing room right now preparing for me to go on stage.

โ€‹

I’d promised myself years ago that I would never have anything to do with another man’s woman. I’d seen the fallout with my brother around how that kind of indiscretion ended.

โ€‹

In our case, it ended badly.

โ€‹

I didn’t steal other men’s wives and I wasn’t about to start on that particular road to ruin, no matter how tempting the woman.

โ€‹

I stood outside the door of my dressing room, I could hear voices coming from inside. Mags and Sheree were talking.

โ€‹

“Jeremy’s complaining there was nothing in the marriage contract about me being dragged all over the world for months on end, and simulating sex on stage with a gorgeous man in front of hundreds of thousands of people,” Sheree said.

โ€‹

Jeremy was a complete dick as far as I was concerned. What was it about the men that the women on my tour chose to marry? I shook my head. I shouldn’t be out here listening, but something prevented me from opening the door and walking in.

โ€‹

“He must have realised what your work involved,” I heard Mags say, “Jules was at your wedding for crying out loud.”

โ€‹

And what a pain-in-the arse event that turned out to be. The press mobbed the reception and I ended up being shuttled out the back door and home. I should have sent the press a thank you note. I’ve no idea who leaked them the information that I’d be there, but poor Sheree—it ruined her day.

โ€‹

“I know, I know,” Sheree agreed. “I didn’t think it worried him until after we got married. He’s gotten strange about it all in the last couple of months. Constant snotty phone calls and texts. I think he wants me to just give up and go home.”

โ€‹

Over my dead body, I thought.

โ€‹

“And what do you want to do?” Good girl, Mags. Looking out for my interests.

โ€‹

“I love my job,” Sheree said. And I loved having her on my team. I trusted her with my life on stage. I couldn’t imagine trying to get through some of the dance routines we managed with anyone else.

โ€‹

“But you love your husband.” Mags wasn’t taking this conversation in the direction I wanted it to go anymore.

โ€‹

“I don’t know what to do,” Sheree whined, “How do you do it? Have a marriage and tour?”

โ€‹

I’d heard enough. I didn’t want to hear Mags’ answer to that question. I pushed the door open and made sure that it banged against the wall as I entered.

โ€‹

“Heya, darlin’,” I said to Sheree as I planted a friendly kiss on the crown of her head. “How’s my number one girl?”

โ€‹

“I’m good, J,” she said throwing me one of her beaming smiles. “How about you?” She didn’t sound so good to me a few seconds ago.

โ€‹

“Ace,” I replied. “Ted’s got me a couple of scorchers sorted,” and I couldn’t resist giving Mags a wink. I might not be able to have her because she was married, but if there was any chance that her marriage might be on the rocks… Well, there was no reason not to let her know that I wouldn’t throw her out of my bed now, was there?

โ€‹

“I saw. At the Club last night,” Sheree said.

โ€‹

I needed to change for the show and I’d given up years ago caring who might see me in my dressing room. I pulled off my hoodie and shirt in one movement and then dropped my jeans.

โ€‹

We’d been on tour for weeks. I was fit and I kept myself in shape when we were on the road. Exercise was one of the things that kept me sane. I’d seen the way that Mags looked at me when I took my clothes off. I knew I wasn’t playing fair, but that didn’t stop me.

โ€‹

I took my time, running my thumb over the rack of clothing in front of me.

โ€‹

“What’s up first, Mags?”

โ€‹

I looked across to her and watched as her eyes came back from my muscled chest to my face.

“The usual,” she said. “Black kicks, black sleeveless T with black shirt over the top and white tie.”

“Right,” I knew the ensemble almost by heart, but I wanted to connect with her before I dressed myself again.

โ€‹

We worked hard to layer me carefully for the show. I started out looking like some clean-cut young man then morphed to dirty rock god in three songs.

โ€‹

I ate another piece of chocolate and then washed it down with some more coffee.

โ€‹

“It’s time for me to move,” Sheree said, “literally.” She stood up, peeling herself from the couch and stretched out her long limbs.

โ€‹

“Yeah, go get yourself warmed up.” I began to turn my mind to the coming show. It needed to be perfect. “See you out the back shortly, yeah?”

โ€‹

Sheree popped a light kiss on my cheek. “Aye, you will, boss.”

โ€‹

“Crap!” I couldn’t help the explosion.

โ€‹

“What’s the problem?” Mags sighed as she too got up from the couch and crossed the room towards me.

“There’s a bloody button missing. What’s up with Wardrobe?”

โ€‹

“Give it here—I’ll take care of it,” Mags said.

โ€‹

There were other things that I’d like Mags to take care of, but for now, I needed to keep my mind on the coming show.

โ€‹

* * *

I stood in the wings, listening to my band driving the crowd to a frenzied peak.

โ€‹

The soft hand of Mags caressed my back as I emptied my stomach of the rubbish I’d consumed backstage. Every time I did this I had a fleeting moment of thinking that I should stop eating shit. But like so many of the vices in my life—I couldn’t stop.

โ€‹

My body heaved convulsively almost in time with the music that rose to a crescendo.

โ€‹

“Okay?” Mags asked as she wiped my mouth with a tissue. What must she think, having to be my nursemaid in the wings like this?

โ€‹

I nodded in the affirmative, shaking the tension from my body and wiping a hand over my mouth. I turned my mind to the job at hand—to make this the best fucking night that the people out front could have this year.

โ€‹

Mags walked with me to the spot where I’d enter the stage. Bouncing on the spot, I closed my eyes and said the prayer that I always recited before I stepped on stage.

โ€‹

Dan touched me on the shoulder.

โ€‹

It was time.

โ€‹

Cue music.

โ€‹

Lights up.

I walked into the deafening roar of the crowd. As I strutted from one side of the stage to the other, sucking up the adoration, I slipped the fold back buds into my ears and readied myself for my opening song.

As much as I loved the energy coming from my fans, it was the worship of the unavailable woman standing in the wings that I secretly wanted.

โ€‹

By the time I’d lost most of my costume and was looking like the bad boy rockstar they’d all paid their money to come and see, I looked to the side of the stage and was surprised to see Mags still standing there. Normally, she’d be gone by now. But tonight, for a reason known only to her she stood watching me from the shadows.

โ€‹

Seeing her there made me smile. When she returned my grin with a genuine look of affection, something inside of me snapped.

โ€‹

I turned my attention back to my job. Back to my fans. But I held on to the warm, private moment we’d shared for the rest of the first act.

โ€‹

By the time I got back to the wings, I was soaking. The heat of the lights and the physical nature of the work simultaneously excited and exhausted me.

โ€‹

Mags towelled me down and not for the first time I wished we were in a private hotel room somewhere, not back stage at a rock concert.

โ€‹

I stripped off my sodden clothes and took the offered bottle of mineral water from Mags.

โ€‹

“How’s it looking?” I asked as I stared into her eyes, trying to rekindle that feeling of connection we’d experienced early in the show. “Do you think they’re loving me out front?”

โ€‹

“You appear to have them in the palm of your hand, as always,” she replied.

โ€‹

I couldn’t help myself. “Maybe it’s not just them I want in the palm of my hand.”

โ€‹

I shimmied myself into the dry white t-shirt she’d handed to me, flicked the last of the water down her front and was back on stage before she had a chance to work out what had happened. I hesitated a moment before I hit the stage proper and turned back to call to Mags.

“You looked like you needed cooling off.”

โ€‹

I knew I was flirting with a married woman. But to hell with it. I was going after what I wanted and be damned with the consequences.

โ€‹

* * *

After the show, I assembled the crew in my dressing room and they stood in front of me waiting for the usual backstage debrief.

โ€‹

I asked them the same question I asked them every night. I wanted them to be honest. Most of the time they were, but on the odd occasion, when I was feeling particularly vulnerable, they might have bent the truth a little.

โ€‹

“So, how did it look tonight, team?” I knew it looked good, so they could be honest.

โ€‹

“Three out of ten,” Dan said as he winked at Mags.

โ€‹

“We aced it!” Frederick lifted me off my feet in a huge bear hug.

โ€‹

“Get off me, you oaf!” I struggled to free myself. I was still soaked from the exertion of being on stage. Water flew from both of our bodies in all directions.

โ€‹

“God, you dickheads,” Sheree wailed as she began to brush the droplets off her skin. “I practically swim with him on stage. I could do without the shower now.”

โ€‹

Once free of Frederick’s vice-like grip I dropped to one knee in front of Sheree, blocking her exit and bringing her hand to my lips. “Forgive me my sweet maid.”

โ€‹

“Sweet maid, my arse,” she snapped, pulling her hand from my grasp.

โ€‹

Dan dug me in the ribs and gave me a leery look. “The way you two cavort out there for all the world to see, if she’s a sweet maid then I must be Mother Fucking Teresa.”

โ€‹

“Grow up!” Sheree growled throwing Dan the kind of look that should have been reserved for reptilian creatures as she stalked out of my dressing room.

โ€‹

I knew something was up with her, but I couldn’t be sure what.

โ€‹

“What’s the matter with her?” Dan’s cocky expression vanished.

โ€‹

“Husband,” Mags said.

โ€‹

I should have guessed. Why the hell she married the moron was beyond me.

โ€‹

“She’s not going to leave me, is she?” I directed the question at Mags. She seemed to have a handle on what was going down with Sheree.

โ€‹

Ted decided now was a good time to join the conversation. “Not unless she wants Dan to sue that tasty arse of hers from one side of the European Union to the other.”

โ€‹

We all glared at him.

โ€‹

Mags looked as if she was going to hit him. “Could you try not to be a typically insensitive drummer for once in your life?”

โ€‹

I unclenched my fist. Sheree wasn’t my wife, but for some reason I wanted to defend her honour. “Jesus,” I sighed. “Don’t let her hubby hear you talking about her like that.”

โ€‹

“Hey mate, I’m not the one who simulates sex with her every night in front of the punters. And he’ll be an ex-husband in no time if he doesn’t sort himself out. She’s not going to give this up for him. He should pull his head in.”

โ€‹

“Just cut it out.” Mags was bringing the conversation to a close.  “Don’t you lot have some groupies you can grope or something?”

โ€‹

“Don’t feel like it.” I said depositing myself on the floor in an exhausted heap. Somehow the elation of the show had vanished.

โ€‹

“Guess we’ll be on our way,” I heard Frederick say.

โ€‹

I was still staring at the floor of the dressing room when I realised that Mags hadn’t left with the others.

“Come on, you.” The tone of her voice reminded me of the tone a nanny would use with a child. I guess I was behaving like a child, but sometimes the pressure of everything got to me.

โ€‹

Tonight was one of those nights.

โ€‹

I couldn’t get the image of Mags stood in the wings of the stage with her soaking shirt out of my mind. I’d been overzealous with the way I’d treated Sheree on stage. Truth be told, I think I was playing out my fantasies around Mags.

โ€‹

I was in trouble here.

โ€‹

Mags tried again. “If you’re not going to go out gadding you should head back to the hotel to bed.”

“Don’t want to!”

โ€‹

Well, not unless Mags was offering to climb in there with me and I didn’t think that offer was on the table. Not tonight, anyway.

โ€‹

* * *

Mags had come back to the hotel with me. She should really have been out on the town with the others, but Mags didn’t really do out on the town. I wondered if it had something to do with the fact that she was married—but then I never liked to think about Mags being married.

โ€‹

A married woman shouldn’t be out on the road as far as I was concerned. Not without her husband anyway and especially not holed up in a hotel room with the likes of me.

โ€‹

I watched her graceful form as she walked across the hotel room, picked up the television remote and turned on the large TV. The LCD screen burst into life and I was washed in a blue light—not unlike the light I’d spent a lot of my time on stage standing beneath. I should have missed daylight while we were on tour, but somehow, with moving from country to country and the jumbled timezones I learned to live beneath artificial light.

โ€‹

“I want National Geographic.” Mags cast a glance at me that for a moment I thought may have been full of sympathy. I didn’t want her feeling sorry for me. I didn’t want her feeling anything for me. It was too dangerous. If I behaved like a complete jerk, then maybe she’d decide touring with me wasn’t for her and she’d go home to that damn husband.

โ€‹

Idiot man. Letting a woman like Mags out on the road with me.

โ€‹

There was something about the way the under sea creatures swam across the screen that began to have a calming effect. I lost track of time. A stingray danced across the screen, seeming to fly though the water.

“We should go there,” I announced.

โ€‹

“Go where?” Mags asked, sounding almost asleep.

โ€‹

“The Pacific Ocean.” Mags needed waking up. I jumped on the couch beside her and marvelled as her eyes grew wide in surprise.

โ€‹

I threw my arms around her. Fuck her husband. If he let her come touring, then I wasn’t going to be responsible for what happened. “You know. You, me and the lads. A bit of scuba diving, lying in the sun.”

โ€‹

“You don’t know how to scuba dive and besides,” she added in a serious tone, “you can’t swim.”

โ€‹

“I can see it now,” I said, getting to my feet, throwing my arms wide and making sure I was the centre of Mags’ undivided attention. “We’ll hire a huge boat.” I began to pace the large room and the ideas started to flow. “You don’t like that idea?” I was all about trying to please Mags now. I thought harder. “I know—a resort.” Everyone loved the idea of lying around the pool, enjoying the sun. “It’ll be great. Sun, sand, scuba.” There was a song there somewhere. I made a mental note. “You need to book something for after the tour.”

โ€‹

I should probably have kept my mouth shut, but there was something about the faraway look in Mags’ eyes that told me she liked the idea.

โ€‹

She wanted me. I was certain of that.

She didn’t want me in the way that the fans who threw themselves at me wanted me. Mags’ attentions were more subtle and of more importance to me. They were genuine.

โ€‹

I’d forgotten what it felt like to be wanted by someone for me—not for the persona who got up on stage every night, but for Julian MacAvoy—the man.

It was endearing and intoxicating and terrifying.
